The Customer
Formed by the merger of Denver-based New Century Energies and Minneapolis-based Northern States Power Co., Xcel Energy is the fourth-largest combination electricity and natural gas energy company in the United States. Xcel offers a comprehensive portfolio of energy-related products and services to 3.2 million electricity customers and 1.7 million natural gas customers.
Xcel manages regulated operations in 11 Western and Midwestern states with revenue of $9.5 billion annually. Xcel owns over 240,000 conductor miles of electricity transmission and distribution lines, more than 32,700 miles of natural gas pipelines, and operates regulated power plants that generate over 15,000 megawatts of electric power.
The Challenge
Xcel Energy wanted an Enterprise Resource Planning system that integrated customer records in many locations for General Ledger, Work Order, and Project Accounting functions. Xcel chose to implement the J.D. Edwards enterprise software, and needed help with documenting design workshops, including assistance with interfaces and financial report writing.
Xcel needed complete and organized design documentation for every workshop they conducted, in order to have an organized reference to carry through its J.D. Edwards OneWorld implementation.
The Solution
Intelligo participated in all of Xcel's design workshops, recording the decisions, the reasons behind the decisions, and the detailed business processes that came out of the workshops. Intelligo crafted Microsoft Visio process flows for all the business processes, to help the project team understand the design and for use in training their end users.
Intelligo's Value-Add
Intelligo's workshop documentation helped keep the project on track by providing a "Bible" of decisions, reasons, issues and action items for the team to follow. This helped Xcel explain their design and the project's achievements to Xcel's leadership and to the organization, and helped avoid dissent from decision-makers who were not involved in the design. Intelligo's expertise saved Xcel hundreds of man-hours in documentation, and helped ensure the smooth progress of the project's design phase by communicating the design clearly and consistently to everyone involved.INTELLIGO, Inc. 2450 S.
