The Customer
Stratos Lightwave International manufactures optical subsystems and fiber optic components for high data rate networking, data storage and telecommunication applications. Its optical subsystems convert electronic signals into optical signals and back into electronic signals and are used in local area networks, storage area networks, metropolitan area networks, wide area networks and central office networking in telecommunication markets. Its optical subsystems are compatible with the transmission protocols used in these networks, including Gigabit Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Fibre Channel and asynchronous transfer mode (ATM).
Stratos is a market leader in high data rate optical subsystems, offering superior optical transmission line performance with industry leading EMI characteristics. Stratos was one of the first to offer 1Gbps 1x9 VCSEL transceivers, 2xFibre Channel SFF transceivers, and Small Form Factor Pluggable transceivers.
Stratos is an industry leader in advanced fiber optic interconnection, providing a broad line of multi-fiber optical components and cable assemblies. Additionally, Stratos offers a full range of specialized fiber assembly services for OEM applications.
The Challenge
Stratos lacked an Enterprise Resource Planning system that integrated every department within its Fiber and Opto Divisions. For example, manufacturers had no computer program that accounted for inventory. By accounting for records with spreadsheets and Microsoft Access databases, Stratos employees agreed that existing systems were outdated and that a need existed for a company of its size and product output. In summary, Stratos sought a way to cut one department's dependency on another for information about a purchase or a sale.
Stratos sought a full-scale performance support program that included the following in addition to the actual implementation of J.D. Edwards OneWorld:
| Project Documentation | ||
| Workshop Documentation | ||
| End User Documentation | ||
| End User Training |
The Solution
Intelligo participated in Stratos system testing by testing all transactions to document, capture screens with Stratos-specific data, and customize its standard Content Library of work instructions to match Stratos' transactions and business processes. Intelligo also crafted Microsoft Visio process flows in each workshop to outline every Stratos business process.
Intelligo captured its Visio process flows in Solution Strategy and J.D. Edwards modular workshops. All workshop documentation included:
| Business process flows | ||
| Issues and action plans | ||
| Points of emphasis | ||
| Questions and answers | ||
| List of Attendees | ||
| Introduction to the module covered in the workshop |
To alleviate Stratos' problem with knowledge of organized distribution procedures, Intelligo first identified every task to document, and then crafted every task in its step-by-step work instructions. These instructions included screen captures with Stratos-specific data.
Intelligo's Value-Add
Intelligo provided expertise for every facet of implementation support by accomplishing the following:
| Wrote summaries that served as complete points of reference for every consultant and business administrator involved in the project | ||
| Crafted more than 300 work instructions with screen captures that displayed Stratos-specific data | ||
| Prepared training materials that allowed both Intelligo consultants and Stratos administrators to conduct organized and well-planned training sessions | ||
| Further organized the entire training scope by developing both a documentation tracking system and curriculum spreadsheet |
This task allowed the implementation team to focus on the implementation of the software instead of the training effort.
